Synopsis:
"Why New Coal" questions India’s fossil-fuel based growth and highlights alternatives for sustainable and equitable development. India is facing severe multiple crises because of our misconception of growth and development (fueled by fossil fuel). There is a huge price being paid by communities across India for the use of coal, and as coal demand increases to sustain our unsustainable lifestyle – the stakes are very high in the future. The film highlights the misconception we hold about our extractable coal availability, unravels the social and economic costs of coal – and puts forward key questions about whom this coal is benefiting – in times of a climate emergency, food and water crisis.
