Synopsis:
Nakamata, is a Witness partner based in Bukidnon province, Mindanao, in the Philippines. They seek to recover and protect the ancestral lands of the indigenous population in the Philippines; to defend the human rights as well as the rights of indigenous populations as distinct peoples; and to improve the current living conditions facing the indigenous population in the region. In 2001, while attempting to conduct GPS surveys of their land claims, a member of Nakamata, Ananias Tahuyan was murdered. This was not the first violent incident, or the last, committed against community members participating in Nakamata's land claim struggle. "Rule of the Gun in Sugarland" documents a three-month period in 2001 when three indigenous leaders were murdered, others attacked, and a village razed as community members peacefully and legally pursued ancestral land claims.
