Synopsis:
Mexican anarchism has a very interesting and long history. In the Mexico City, it initiated in 1860 with the arrival of a Greek called Rodakanathy that built a school wherein were popularized ideas from Bakunin - the rurals of Chalco - who organized the first revolts against the government of Benito Juárez. Later, some time before the revolution and with the help of the constant migration from Mexico to the U.S.A., the non-conformists ideas returned to steep rural workers. At the time, the Flores Magón brothers had played an important role in the Zapatismo revolution and the workers' movements. The anarchistic movement was notably forgotten, but nevertheless it left as inheritance the unions that defend the workers, and many ideas regarding community and auto-management patrolling. Thirty years later, thanks to the Spanish exile, the propagation of anarchism returns to claim political importance and fills a great part of the population in the center of the country with the libertarian ideas of the antifrancoist Spain. The relations seek to restructure the worker-boss hierarchy. Anarchism, again, diminishes to a few very specific and limited sectors of the country without having a real, widespread uprising. Nevertheless, it still exists today not with little force. Libertarian ideas are present in a great quantity of people of different origins of class and nationality. This documentary is a portrait of what it means today to be an anarchist in a city of 25 million inhabitants. It is a documentary that reminds us of the possibility to live otherwise, and remembers that we must retain our own freedom and right to life. Tobi was punk, now he is 50 years old and together with Marta, they keep the Bilbioteca Social alive to reconstruct the project originally initiated by the Spanish anarchist Ricardo Mestre. The library contains files of enormous historical importance, as well as more than five thousand titles on the topic. Jacinto and Claudio, historians, have deepened their studies in the processes of anarchism, from the time of the Flores Magón brothers to the crumbled labor system today. Ignacio initiated the Cultural Multiforum Alicia 15 years ago, and up to today it is kept absolutely independent, “autogestivo”, and with the incorruptible idea of supporting the free place of political parties, without repression or discrimination. It is one of the only spaces that has not fallen in with a trend of discrimination. Through this film, we can learn about an important part of contemporary Mexico and the offer of a generation which is looking for another possible, more just world less crossed by the violence of unstoppable capitalism.
