Director: Troy Stozek | Producer: Stephane McLachlan
Focus Years: 2013 | Country: Canada
Synopsis:
This feature-length documentary film highlights some of the impacts and resolve related to ongoing industrial development and injustice on traditional territories of First Nations people in the Canadian provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The story begins in Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation, where oil and gas development has led to environmental injustice, including a decline in the health of moose, a cultural keystone species and staple food source. Similar stories are shared in Saskatchewan, where we interview members from Cote and Keeseekoose First Nations. There, industrial agriculture, deforestation and ‘game farming’ have led to similar health and population declines in moose, deer and elk, along with the highly contagious Chronic Wasting Disease. Despite a long history of colonization and struggle, community members see value in combining Traditional Knowledge with western science when confronting these problems head on. Awaking Spirit is about all people (re)discovering how to walk less harmfully and more cooperatively on Mother Earth before it is too late.
