Director: Martin Nguyen | Producer: Arash T. Riahi, Michael Seeber
Focus Years: 2012 | Country: Austria
Synopsis:
In the 80s in a small Austrian village an old man, Mr. Karlhofer, saw a TV report about the struggle of Vietnamese Boat People. He decided to do something. He brought a young Vietnamese couple with a baby to his village, and organised a home and work for them. This family was my parents and I.
In the past, there was another helper: Ali, a former Malaysian police officer. Ali supported them with food and stuff my father could sell. When they left the refugee camp Pulau Bidong, my parents promised Ali they would write, but my father lost the address. He was never able to say “Thank youâ€, never able to say that all went fine. “Let’s go back to Malaysia and look for him,†my father suggests to me.
The film tells the story of my family, who fled Vietnam in the 1980s and settled down in a small Austrian village to build up a new life. After all, they return for the first time to Malaysia to find Ali and the former refugee camp Pulau Bidong where I’ve been born. The past meets the present.
