Synopsis:
What could be more natural than a woman wanting the best for her child? “The Illegal Immigrants (Clandestines)” is the story of a journey fraught with danger travelled every year by thousands of Comorian women wishing to give birth on Mayotte, the only island in the archipelago to have remained French. What pushes them to embark with such peril in kwassas, hastily-built crafts with no guarantee of safety, is the hope of escaping the economic hardship of their daily lives. For only a narrow strip of sea separates the French island from one of the poorest countries in the world, Comoros.
