The Pain Inside| 49mins
Director: Charlotte Bruneau | Producer: Free Lens TV
Focus Years: 2013 | Country: Germany
Synopsis:
Leaving Israel has long been condemned by the Israeli society, concerned with having as many Jews as possible joining the State of Israel and its army.
However, for an increasing number of Israeli youth, leaving becomes part of growing up: most of them embark on a backpacking trip upon completing their military service. This trip is an opportunity to reflect on one’s past and future. Some also decide never to come back; they prefer to live in peace.
More and more Israelis are flocking to Europe. We meet some in Berlin, the capital of Germany—the new "Mecca", they say. Many do not understand this struggle for Palestine anymore; they prefer to think about their career and have other dreams. Germany has been forgiven, and the Israeli youth with German roots try to get their nationality back.
Back in the Middle East, discovering the gap between the Tel Aviv nightlife and the occupied territories is an adventure only some Israelis are ready to make. Those who do, share with us the questions that those two extreme environments have raised.
In the end, the movie asks questions about the dreams and values of the contemporary Israeli youth and the quest that they have engaged in to achieve them, both within the "promised land" and outside.
