Synopsis:
Cambodia has 15 million inhabitants and more than 10 million live in rural areas. 7 million of these villagers don't have any access to drinking water and have no other choice than to consume the water of rivers or lakes. Chay Lo grew up in the northeast of the Cambodia, the old territory of the Khmer Rouges. He escaped death several times, lived with the Buddhist monks at Battambang and in Phnom Penh. He studied successfully in France to become an agricultural engineer, but in spite of the request of big international groups, he chose to return to his native country to accompany its recovery and to bring water to his village. He then co-founds "1001 fountains for tomorrow" and manage the NGO "Teuk Saat on 1001", created as a local platform in Cambodia. Thanks to an ingenious environment-friendly plan, this NGO aims to improve the health of the rural populations of developing countries by providing them the means to produce healthy drinking water locally. His experiment requires only few technical machines, the solar energy that is sufficient to feed a lamp ultraviolet rays and a simple system of filtration. The success of this project also leans on a virtuous entrepreneurial model which assures the autonomy of the village and the sustainability of the solution. By increasing production, the producer improves the health of the whole community. His commitment to the service of the others, won him many praises of the authorities of the Cambodian state. From now on, his model shines in the Asian continent and beyond. Chay Lo, was recognized as one of the youngest people to win "the most remarkable of the planet" title in 2007 and "as the social entrepreneur of year 2011" for Asia. The NGO "Teuk Saat on 1001" received an award for Best Renewable Resources, Water Stewardship within the framework of "Asian Sustainability Leadership Awards" on September 25th, 2012 in Dubai.
