Saving Papua by Not Cycling There| 1hr : 24mins
Director: Florian Augustin | Producer: Florian Augusitn
Focus Years: 2014 | Country: Germany
Synopsis:
Actually, I wanted to cycle from Berlin to West Papua, Indonesia, in order to bring awareness to an ongoing environmental and geopolitical conflict — the indigenous people of Papua's fight for independence from their Indonesian occupation. Papua only belongs to Indonesia, because of the natural resources found on Papua.
From Berlin till India the cycling trip went pretty well, but then things got complicated. The border between India and Burma was closed. So, people told me to get on an airplane and fly over Burma to Thailand or Singapore and continue the journey from there. This was really the last thing that I felt like doing — because talking about environmental and geopolitical problems that are caused by a growing demand for resources and flying does not make any sense to me. And because flying is one of the most resource-intensive actions one can take as a global citizen.
So, I went back to Berlin on land. This film documents the last leg of a one-year journey: from New Delhi to Nepal, Tibet, China, Central Asia, the Caucasus, Ukraine, Poland, Germany.
