This is a unique film, which presents path-breaking information and shows that the cultures of India and Japan are deeply interconnected. It is made by an eminent Asian cultural historian and consists of primary research. The Japan Foundation of the Japanese Government are saying that this research has taken Indo-Japan relations to a new level. The film was extensively shot in Japan. This film was made with an unprecedented level of cooperation granted by 50 of the most important temples of Japan and their Chief Priests. Normally, video shooting is not allowed within these ancient temples and the Chief Priests are extremely guarded about granting interviews. Most people are not aware that at least a score of Hindu deities are very actively worshiped in Japan. Even deities which have been forgotten in India today are revered in Japan. Hardly any person in India or in Japan has known about this. This film clearly puts across the information for the first time. The 6th-century Sanskrit script is preserved in Japan, though we do not use it in India. This Sanskrit script from India is found in practically every home of Japan. ‘Beejaksharas’, or sacred syllables of Sanskrit in this script are regarded as holy and are given great importance. Each deity has a ‘Beejakshara’ and these are venerated by the people. The tradition of ‘havan’ (Hindu fire sacrifice) continues in thousands of temples of Japan. Sanskrit sutras are also chanted on the occasion. Many words in the Japanese language are from Sanskrit. Sanskrit was also the basis for the formation of the Japanese alphabet ‘Kana’. This film marks a wonderful expansion of the role which the video-film can play.
