Director: Guo Jing & Ke Dingding | Producer: Lawrence Elman
Focus Years: 2010 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
In China, you only get one shot at being a parent. With the one child per couple law still in place, the aspirations of entire extended families rest on the tiny head of a newborn baby. When Chinese divorcee Jun gets pregnant unexpectedly, she and partner Long launch themselves first into marriage and then parenthood – despite the fact that neither has finished his/her PhD thesis.
Like all traditional Chinese parents, Jun’s mother considers her grandchild her responsibility. Despite Jun’s ambivalence towards her mother, she is happy to have her help with the baby – at first. As the baby grows, the couple longs for independence, but feel more tightly bound by family ties than ever. As both resume their work, the pressures mount. By closely watching and questioning, filmmakers Guo Jing and Ke Dingding have carved a remarkable portrait of one modern Chinese family.
