Synopsis:
What happens to the balance between the Earth and all living things when man intervenes in nature's environments dependent on water? We look at how species survive in the Namibia Desert and at Glen Canyon in the U.S., where a large dam obstructs the Colorado River. The series explores the shrinking of wetlands in Holland, and then ends up in the Ecuadorian rainforest now suffering damage by oil production. The second half of the episode explores the issue of pollution and its continuing impact on the world's need for clean water. In 1854, a cholera epidemic in Western Europe revealed that water quality is vital for health. In Bangladesh, local communities look for solutions to the problem of diarrhea. In Ukraine, outdated industries have choked the waterways. The pollution of Europe's Rhine river has been an important if not the most important incentive for the formulation of ECC-water quality policies.
