Synopsis:
This exploration of the ancient religious themes of India begins at Haridwar on the Ganges river, at the foothills of the Himalayas. The camera takes the viewer upriver to a fork where the first two tributaries of the Ganges join. At this spot there is a small village so remote that the ancient tradition continues to flow as purely as the mountain streams at its feet.
Street scenes and visits to two family homes provide a glimpse of the life style of the villagers and some information about the values and rituals that guide daily life there. The film's narrator explains some of the mythic underpinnings of the vegetarianism, hymn singing, temple ceremonies, and the marking and meditative rituals of holy men. Although the village was long insulated from Western influences so that it preserved ancient practices and beliefs in a pure form, the presence of a television in one of the homes may well be a harbinger of change, perhaps unwelcome for those who revere tradition. This film was the winner of the 1989 American Video Conference Award in the category Religion and Philosophy in Hollywood. This national competition for special-interest filmmakers in the USA used to be presented yearly by the American Film Institute, Billboard, and the Hollywood Reporter.
