Synopsis:
The film, "When disaster strikes: The story of Samiyarpettai" was shot a few months after the tsunami that struck parts of Southern India on 26 December 2004. The film is based on the community based training approaches piloted in Samiyarpettai, a 'model' village identified in Tamil Nadu under the Government of India-UNDP National Disaster Risk Management Programme. This village reported fewer deaths due to the tsunami thanks to the training received by the local communities in rescue and evacuation, survival skills and safety techniques, first aid and other areas.
