Synopsis:
When accidents in the brain reveal extraordinary skills - featuring George Widener, the human calculator, and Tommy McHugh, a labourer turned into an artist by a stroke. Their stories will lead us into the brain of savants, people with a few extraordinary, almost superhuman skills that usually come at the expense of other cognitive skills we all take for granted. The Savant Brain shows how remarkable talents can be revealed by accident – not just at birth, but in mid-life, through a brain trauma such as a stroke. Scientists will pose the tantalizing notion that we all may have hidden talents buried within our brains that are only waiting to be unleashed. My Brilliant Brain uses biographies of three brilliant brains as a springboard to explore the hidden potential in all our brains. Each one is a scientific phenomenon: a 12-year-old pianist who has written his first symphony before his first kiss; a female chess Grand Master who takes on all comers blindfolded and a man who has memorized 8,000 books and yet has an IQ of 70. These stories fascinate us, even though they appear to reflect the shortcomings of our own brains. Yet by understanding these extraordinary brains, we will show how we may improve our ordinary brains and perhaps unlock the remarkable genius that lies dormant within all of us.
