Synopsis:
Extreme poverty has plagued the hardworking families living in Leon, Nicaragua for many years. The majority of the families affected by poverty live in “settlements†on the outskirts of the city. Each morning, members of the settlement travel to the heart of the city selling baked goods, clothing, and newspapers to provide for their families. Every night, they return to their homes made of plastic tarps, rotting wood, or if they are lucky enough, sheet metal. Michelle Chavez is a member of Techo, an organization that believes adequate housing is the first step towards self-reliance. Upon searching these settlements, she finds a family of three living in a house that has to be evacuated every time it rains. "Ignorar No Resuelve. El Asentamiento Existe" (Ignoring Doesn’t Solve. The Settlement Exists) is the slogan chosen by Techo but it’s more than a slogan it’s a call to action for the citizens of Leon to acknowledge the existence of the conditions of the settlements and actively work to change them.
