Synopsis:
He's been cussed out and shot at, but Larry Gibson refuses to abandon his home atop Kayford Mountain in West Virginia. For decades, Gibson has been fighting to save his family's land from one of the biggest mountaintop removal mines in Appalachia, a mine operated by a subsidiary of the infamous Massey Energy. "Mountain Man" takes you to the top of Kayford Mountain for Larry Gibson's annual 4th of July celebration, and spotlights the community behind the man. Mountaintop removal remains a divisive issue in West Virginia, despite the environmental destruction associated with it, because of the economics of the region - the mines consistently rank among the highest paying employers in the area. “Mountain Man” explores both sides of the argument and features interviews with retired coal miner Chuck Nelson, Jesuit Wheeling University biologist Dr. Benjamin Stout III, Coal River Mountain Watch activist Rory McIlmoil, political strategist Mudcat Saunders and Cabinet Secretary of the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection Randy Huffman.
