Synopsis:
'The People’s Nepal' is a film narrating the untold story of the 2006 revolution in this small Himalayan kingdom. It makes a strong appeal for peace in a place where people simply want to live with equality, human rights, and freedom.
A haunting bell sets the mood for the sights, sounds, and music of a culture little-known to the Western world, but home to 61 ethnic groups and 40 tribes, consisting of loving, non-violent people living in harmony.
The story opens and closes with the annual parade of the Machindranath chariot being carried through the streets. It is said that if the chariot overturns, the king will lose his power. On June 11, 2008, the chariot fell.
The film reveals the history, injustices, and attitudes that mobilized the people to demand the king’s overthrow during a 19 day revolution. Seven speakers offer their own insights into the causes and events: a high school teacher, union activist, a male and female Maoist party member, an auditor for the Nepal Mountaineering Association, a representative of the Nepalese Trade Unions, and a human rights lawyer. Excellent archival photos further illustrates the history of a line of kings who believed themselves to be Gods.
The camera travels into villages exposing the human rights violations brought on by a caste system and extreme poverty in one of the least developed countries in the world. The audience get to witness very personal accounts of how the lower class has been suppressed with no education, no health facilities, no food, and no jobs. The government has given them nothing. Women have started to demand social and economic equality wanting to break the tradition where boys get books, while girls cook.
All these abuses gave rise to the Nepali Civil War, a ten-year conflict between government forces and the Maoist rebels, which began in 1996 with the aim of overthrowing the Nepalese monarchy and establishing the People's Republic of Nepal. Rebelling against the king’s martial rule and imposed curfews, about 500,000 protesters took to the streets in April, 2006 in an attempt to oust the king.
As the king controlled all media and communication, Westerners had heard only bits and pieces about the civil war and later, the April rioting. 'The People’s Nepal' contains incredible, on-the-spot video footage of what actually took place in the capital city of Kathmandu. Armed with only rocks, banners, and the demand for peace and equality, demonstrators confronted the police - who in contrast were armed with shields and rifles.
This previously unseen footage is extremely graphic and alarming showing citizens being beaten and killed by the police in an effort to quell the uprising. All along, the seven narrators comment on the events and their vision on the future of Nepal, a country torn by strife and caught in a political deadlock.
The Nepalese only seek to obtain a popular elected government that cares about its people. They believe that if the people of the birthplace of Buddha cannot cultivate peace, what hope is there for the rest of the world?
