Synopsis:
Kerala, the southernmost state in India is unique in many ways. Kerala is noted for a population growth rate that is less than the national average, low infant mortality, a death rate matching any of the advanced nations, a high gender ratio, and high literacy. Rising tourism also shows some promise for Kerala. Yet, Kerala remains a food-insecure state. There are more than 3.6 million families in Kerala living below the poverty line, earning less than the equivalent of one U.S. dollar a day.
Globalization, liberalization, urbanization, population growth, the rising price of fuel, climate change—all these contributed to upsetting world food security. In Kerala, too, the reasons are no other. My film examines the reasons for Kerala’s food insecurity.
It is estimated that 1 billion people in the world today, or, in other words, 1 in every 7 human beings, cannot afford the minimum nutrition essential for a healthy life.
The key message of the film is that food production is dwindling all over the world and so is the range and variety of food. For the poor, food is hard to get. It is a fact that even people whom we regard as having food security, do not actually have a safe and balanced diet.
