Director: Elisabetta Castana | Producer: Rai Educational
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: Italy
Synopsis:
A biography of Father Lorenzo Milani, a priest who, between 1950 and 1967, had the courage to oppose a reactionary church conniving with political power. He rediscovered the gospel message to apply it to the reality of an Italy split between north and south, rich and poor, educated and illiterate. The strength of Father Milani has been to do what the state has not made and that the church believed not to have to do: provide education to the disadvantaged people. Opposed by the left, hated by the right, ostracized by the church, Father Milani had to suffer the humiliation of being confined in a remote mountain village. But it was just from there which started his revolution, fought using the force of words, together with his young pupils, the poor children of a lesser Italy. With the release of his pacifist pamphlet anti-Vietnam war, but especially with the publication of the book "Letter to a Teacher", he would lay the foundations of what was to become the Italian student protest movement of 1968.
