Focus Years: 1996 | Country: Canada
Synopsis:
They are children of survivors and perpetrators of the Holocaust. Polarized as their heritage is, many of this generation shares a legacy of silence. Canadian film-maker Irene Angelico, herself a child of survivors, undertakes a deeply personal journey. She asks, what happened and why? This powerful emotional journey is structured around the film-maker’s emotional quest. Having grown up in the shadow of the Holocaust, she reaches for comprehension through interviews with survivors and their children in Montréal and Israel. Despite her reluctance, her journey inevitably takes her to Germany, where rare interviews show a range of voices among her German contemporaries. Some are as compelled as she is to piece the silence, while others retreat into prejudice and denial. The film offers no easy answers. Winner of six international awards.
