Director: Mino Dutertre | Producer: Cyrille de Canson
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: France
Synopsis:
In times in which progress is no more than a synonym for speed and technology, the hang, a percussion instrument endowing an entire range, has just been born out of a simple piece of sheet metal. This oval instrument is a fantasy that escaped from Swiss Félix Rohner's imagination and ends up in the hands of Modou, a young Senegalese musician, who uses this instrument to cross borders instead of a passport. From Bern to Cairo, via Paris, Modou tries out these new tonalities in improvised concerts and meetings with musicians. While singing Sufi poems with ephemeral jazz bands, Modou takes us into his "Soufi Jazz" universe where languages, instruments and cultures mix amongst each other. A modest and remarkable person, he draws the East and the West closer together, thanks to his unique and witty music.
