Twilight of the Hooded Grebe| 33mins
Director: Marcelo Vias | Producer: Juan Maria Raggio
Focus Years: 2012 | Country: Argentina
Synopsis:
This is the first documentary produced completely in Argentina, for the hooded grebe, a species in critical danger of extinction. Its goal is the creation of a national park in the only area where the hooded grebe lives. In this film, the organization Aves Argentinas tells the story of the grebe starting with its discovery in 1975 by naturalist Maricio Rumboll, who returns to the grebe's territory today after many years to see his species slipping from his hands.
Meanwhile, a group of young researches and naturalists do their best to preserve and study the few remaining birds in the harsh plateau, learning and showing the grebe's problem: the gulls and two introduced species that modify and decimate their populations. But there is hope: the creation of a protected area. Thanks to this documentary, the lands in the province of Santa Cruz, where this documentary was filmed, were ceded to the Argentine government for the creation of a new national park, Patagonia, to protect this species, which, like so many others, are endemic to the area.
