Synopsis:
Can we go from a world powered by fossil fuels and nuclear energy to one powered by renewable energy, and what would happen to us - as individuals and communities - if we tried? Green economy educator David Chernushenko installed solar panels on his Ontario home in 1999 with the dream of feeding his "renewable" energy into the system. In 2008, the Ontario government still won't allow him to connect, yet it has decided to spend billions on more nuclear plants, when taxpayers are still paying for the old ones. Convinced that Ontarians deserve better, David begins a journey to see if we can all do better with energy. His quest takes him to pioneering communities in Europe which have achieved a "100% renewable" supply, out to California, and then then back home. To his surprise, what David really discovers is where to look to find the "power" to make a difference. "Powerful" is a general audience film that asks fundamental and sometimes uncomfortable questions about energy and power. But the journey for the viewer is not an uncomfortable one. "Powerful" is about people, and about the passion of some people, alone and in communities, to work toward solutions - rather than get bogged down in the problems.
