The Treasure of Kufrein is a true story about the complexities of war – when good neighbors suddenly become a source of fear, and people become refugees in their own country. It is also a story that reflects the long years of hope, trust and striving for peace of people living in a country that has repeatedly witnessed these human and historical upheavals. But The Treasure of Kufrein is also a legend of sorts — and a very real part of the filmmaker’s childhood. Terrible things happen in the name of war. In 1948, the village of Kufrein is abandoned during the war. Soldiers ransack the village, taking coins and jewelry and other trinkets from the people’s homes. The following day, the soldiers hand the treasures out – as gifts - to the children of the neighboring settlement. Realizing that the treasure is spoils of war from Kufrein, the adults quickly gather it up again and bury it deep in the earth, until peace returns. The Treasure of Kufrein is a human interest story, which touches upon subtle and sensitive social issues. As in any conflict, politics play a role, but the film is also a glimpse at local history, as it looks at 60 years in the history of a small conflicted country. It is also a personal story with universal messages. Zohar Sela, the filmmaker, is a professional film editor with many years’ experience editing full-length features, documentaries and television series; he is also a professional photographer and musician.
