Director: Matthew Fletcher | Producer: Patrick Bonsant
Focus Years: 2013 | Country: United States
Synopsis:
Prior to 1947, the Indian Cellar was a beautifully scenic, richly historic tourist attraction located in Hollis, Maine. Whitewater rapids once tore through the granite gorge in the spring and hundreds of people would visit the area to watch the awesome spectacle of log drives or just sit on the shoreline and enjoy the natural beauty of the wild river. The Indian Cellar was said to be a sacred place for Native Americans who once traveled the length of the river on their way to traditional fishing grounds on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Southern Maine. The Indian Cellar and the Salmon Falls Gorge were lost forever when a dam was constructed downriver, flooding the area and submerging this treasured region of Hollis. After the hydro-power plant was constructed, the people stopped coming. More than half a century later, the Indian Cellar was, much to the surprise and dismay of the local citizenry, purchased by a developer and plans for a 12-house lot subdivision were underway. Saco River Indian Cellar details the steps taken to save the park and makes a plea for the sustained conservation effort necessary to preserve the land for future generations.
