Synopsis:
Sahel Calling embodies the motivational and reconciliatory power of music to confront a radical political agenda and its consequences on peace and survival in West Africa. Based around the tragic events in 2012-2013 in Mali, the hopes and fears of a terrorized and splintered population are expressed by local musicians, the “voice of the voicelessâ€. Through interviews, concert footage, refugee camp and home visits, weddings and a divorce, Sahel Calling shows the humanitarian needs of internally displaced persons, refugees and the general population. Though many musicians in the film are they themselves displaced from their homes or are directly affected by the struggle, they continue singing to bear witness, to forgive and to reconcile. The film was released, for free, in honor of World Refugee Day, June 20, 2013.
