Kathryn WERNTZ

Live simply, so that others may simply live...
I love living at life´s confluences...art+science, kids+animals, chocolate+fruit, music+human rights...the latter intersection is what drove me from being a teacher/farmer/trainer/editor to a film maker!

I split my geography between Dakar, Sénégal and Berlin, Germany...and split my time between family, friends, playing trombone, dancing, reading, exploring...and...eating, lots and lots of eating!

I´m just an ordinary person, who driven by curiosity and conviction, tends to land herself in Forrest Gump situations...playing trombone for Angela Merkel, shaking hands with Al Gore, tracking tigers – and elephants, sitting back stage with Habib Koité, flying over NYC in a Cessna, scrunching freshly dried Demeter Ceylon tea leaves in my palm, and chilling with Tiken Jah Fakoly.

Greeting each day with anything´s possible, while at the same time setting my sights on certain goals and walking with compassion, means I meet a ton of people...and some of those people, got caught in a terrible situation in Mali...which is what drove me to drop my entire life and set out to let the world know what they were going through...

Synopsis:
Sahel Calling embodies the motivational and reconciliatory power of music to confront a radical political agenda and its consequences on peace and survival in West Africa. Based around the tragic events in 2012-2013 in Mali, the hopes and fears of a terrorized and splintered population are expressed by local musicians, the “voice of the voiceless”. Through interviews, concert footage, refugee camp and home visits, weddings and a divorce, Sahel Calling shows the humanitarian needs of internally displaced persons, refugees and the general population. Though many musicians in the film are they themselves displaced from their homes or are directly affected by the struggle, they continue singing to bear witness, to forgive and to reconcile. The film was released, for free, in honor of World Refugee Day, June 20, 2013.
