Synopsis:
Riverine deaths are rare phenomena. And the rebirth of rivers is quite unheard of. PUNARJJANI tells the story of the river KODUNKARAPPALLAM, the only major river of Eastern Attappady, predominantly a tribal hamlet in Palghat District of Kerala, India, taking rebirth after twenty years of its disappearance. The Attappady wasteland comprehensive Environmental conservation project mainly aimed at the development of replicable models of participatory eco-restoration. The three stage ridge to valley treatment of catchments with afforestation, soil conservation, and insitu water harvesting by facilitating the high velocity run off to walk, stop and percolate enabled the conservation of rain water which gradually saturated the aquifers that constantly fed the river and it began to wake up from its slumber. The river had shown signs of rejuvenation since the year 2005. From 2009 onwards it flowed for 10-11 months, the way it used to flow before it got dried up in the middle eighties.
